Three puppies recently signed over to
Animal Rescue of Carroll passed away due to Parvo.
Five Bassett Hound/Lab mixed puppies recently signed over to Animal Rescue of Carroll have tested
positive for Parvovirus and three have died in the past week. The puppies were from a rural
farm in the Denison/Schleswig area and were born in mid-July. The affected puppies
had littermates that were given away before Animal Rescue became involved.
Animal Rescue of
Carroll (ARC) asks that anyone who has received one of these puppies to contact their vet immediately. Their vet can advise
them what vaccinations are needed and what treatment, if any, should be done for the puppy and any other exposed dogs.
Parvovirus is highly contagious
and, if left untreated, can be fatal. Intestinal signs of Parvovirus include;
► Lethargy
► Vomiting
► Loss
of appetite
► Diarrhea - usually bloody
and very foul-smelling (a characteristic odor, particular to Parvovirus infection)
► Fever
There is also a cardiac
form of the disease.
Animal
Rescue of Carroll is seeking donations for the cost of care for the remaining puppies which included Emergency Veterinary
visits, vet clinic stays, vaccinations, medications and fluids. Total cost to care for the five puppies was approximately
$800 dollars.
